Should Colleges Look at Applicant's Social Media?

Recently, my Graphic Design class discussed an article about a girl who, while attending a college tour, tweeted about her fellow attendees, saying negative things about them. Because of this, the college  rejected her.

I agree completely with their actions. That was immature for her to do and gave a very bad impression.

So, yes, I do agree with colleges looking at applicant's social media. However, I believe that they should keep certain things in mind before 86ing many students.

First, the date of a post. Let's say, for example, I was a party animal when I was a freshmen in high school. Now, as a senior, I'm well put together, I have an excellent GPA, and I'm all cleaned up. I have a photo on my Facebook of me partying as a freshmen that I completely forgot about. It would be alright if the college asked me about it in my interview, but it would be just plain wrong to deny my access to their school. I am a different person as a senior than as a freshmen.

Second, I am not the same person as my siblings. Let us say that I have a great GPA, I don't get in trouble, and I've made good choices. Now, on Facebook, my brother lets the world know that he likes to do drugs, party, and make bad choices. The college may assume that I'm like my brother, and deny me. I can't control my brother, so I cant ask him to take all of that down. It is just not right.

Yea, I'm all for colleges peeking at social media to get more information on an applicant. They just need to think before making rash decisions.

KAWS and Me

Recently, I went on a trip to the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at the Johnson County Community College with my Graphic Design II class. We went on a tour, and the main exhibits that we saw were for the artists KAWS and Mortimer.

I was immediately drawn to KAWS.

His work consists of taking famous cartoon characters and adding a bit of...of...

Whimsical morbidity. That's it. Whimsical morbidity.

For example, he's taken Mickey Mouse and gave him a skull and crossbones for a head and x's for eyes and x's on his hands and feet. He's taken Spongebob, put x's in his eyes, took him apart, and made sort of Spongebob body part collages, except in neon. He's taken Snoopy, gave him x's for eyes, and made him frown

If you have guessed, his trade mark is x's for/over eyes, and sometimes on various parts of the character's body.

Anyway, KAWS had me transfixed on his work. I even find myself still thinking about his pieces, a day later. I love KAWS, and he inspires me in ways I couldn't have possibly imagined.

That's me, with morbid Spongebob. ^~^

Logos vs. Graffiti

Logos and graffiti. Everyone thinks that those two things are radically different. But, maybe, possibly they are somewhat THE SAME?!?!?!

Hold on, I'll go slow. First, lets view how they are different, since they obviously are. Logos are used in professional situations, while graffiti is more of a street thing. The colors and overall design of graffiti is very freeform and disorganized. Logos, on the other hand, are crisp and modern, with precise color schemes. There is also the obvious, logos are legal and graffiti is not.

Now, we're about to get real here. Graffiti and logos are similar in ways that people really don't think about. For example, they both represent something. Think of the software and hardware company Apple. You're thinking of that little white apple, with a bit of the side missing, aren't you? It means something, it represents the company. Graffiti does the same thing. Graffiti can represent the artist, a certain political view, or even a strong message. They are both attempting to get a point across.

Well, there you go. I'm not entirely sure how to wrap this up, so...

Logos and graffiti....the same and different...yea...
